'Glorious Goodwood' is just special. King Edward VII described it as 'a garden party with racing tacked on.' But actually the racing is special as well and now ranks as some of the best in Europe.
Now King Edward VII did of course help this to happen because in 1906 he discarded formal morning dress in favour of a linen suit and Panama hat.
And that is how it has remained ever since: a fantastic race meeting with the spirit of an English garden party, with the gentlemen in linen suits and Panamas and the ladies in their summer fashions and of course their hats.
This sense of occasion and party is enhanced because of the setting. The racecourse is probably the most stunning in England, sitting on it's perch on top of the South Downs. And if the setting wasn't enough, the meeting held in early August, usually coincides with the best weather of an English summer.
