The meeting known as Derby Day revolves around one race, 'The Derby' which is possibly the best known Flat Race in the world.

The race and the meeting have a colourful history. The location became known for alleged healing properties of the water from one of the springs in 1618. Crowds came out from the crowded streets of London to take the water and enjoy the country air. The first recorded race meeting was held in 1661.

Then in 1771 the 12th Earl of Derby organised a race amongst his friends for three-year-old fillies over a distance of one and a half miles. The race was a great success and more races were added over the next few years. In 1779, the title of the main race was decided by the flip of a coin between the Earl of Derby and Sir Charles Banbury. The rest is history.

To this day the meeting holds a special place. Crowds flock to the spectacular racecourse on the North Downs and the  'The Derby' is the race everyone wants to win. It is a great occassion, in a spectacular setting with a great sense of history, especially in the towering grandstands and enclosures along the final staight.
